The significance of John Snelgrove in bringing together and holding together the international church pastors cannot be too overstated. International pastors are a unique blend of denominational and non-denominational men and women gathered from the four corners of the earth to lead often culturally diverse and multi-lingual congregations. The often-weighty demands of the church community mean the temptation for pastors is to be fi rmly focused upon the local church community. John helps to remind us and has created opportunities for us to work together in unity, to see our mission as a collective group for the good of Hong Kong and the expansion of God’s Kingdom. Through conferences, workshops, prayer breakfasts, meetings and exhibitions, John has been at the forefront of inspiring cooperation and joint working. Without John, I’m not sure that there would be as much cooperation or united prayer for our city.
For well over 20 years, I have looked to John as an older brother who gently and wisely guides me through the lay of the land of ministry in Hong Kong. His passion is unparalleled, but beyond the exuberance is a wise, steady, experienced man of God who is deeply devoted to the spiritual vitality of Hong Kong, and in particular, the men and women who vocationally serve God in this great city. My prayer is to finish my life in Hong Kong, having similarly devoted my gifts and energy to making God and His ways known as broadly as possible. It's vital for people like me to have a source of wisdom greater than my own, and a trusted confi dante who has also been in the trenches. John Snelgrove is such a man. I pray he will be utilised well in the sunset years of his life, leveraging all that God has built into him for the betterment of the church throughout the city.
Pastor John is deeply passionate about seeing the Church in Hong Kong come together as one body of Christ to proclaim the gospel. He inspires us in the work he does to unite the local and international churches, breaking down barriers and fostering unity. He is a leading voice for church unity in the city and a pastor to many pastors.
Pastor John Snelgrove has served in our midst as the Lead Pastor in the English Worship and English District ministry since September 2016. Time really flies and we have witnessed Pastor John lay out a solid foundation for the English ministry that bears the following three characteristics.
Pastor John, we are so delighted to have served with you and Sandra. We appreciate your service and contribution to Kong Fok Church. God bless.
John and Sandra have invested decades of their lives in the unity of the church in Hong Kong. They are uniquely gifted and qualifi ed to take on this next chapter of globally strategic leadership for the church. Every movement needs spiritual parents. There are none better than John and Sandra.
Sandra is a matriarch in the family of God in our city. She has seen a generation born, come of age, marry, have children and grow into leadership and she continues to walk with us and our children. Her heart for people regardless of age, race, or background has positioned her as a bridge in Hong Kong between generations and denominations. Sandra brings a unifying and stabilising presence to the gathering of women’s ministry leaders that have been meeting together since last November and we greatly value her voice and her wisdom and discernment.
Over the many years that I’ve known and served with Pastor John, I’ve always been inspired and challenged by his passion to see the generations in the Body of Christ come together, walk together and work together to advance His Kingdom both in HK and beyond. He doesn’t just preach sermons about it; he actually prioritizes it and creates space for it in his personal life and ministry, even when it is very costly and highly inconvenient. I truly am grateful to Pastor John for being a much needed bridge between the generations and a true champion of unity for the Church of Hong Kong!
Over the past 30 years, I have met John as a leader in the marketplace, the founder of an international church, a doctoral student with publishable work, the lead pastor for the international ministry of a local church and now the founder of ‘Priscilla & Aquila’. No matter where he is, Sandra and John are so unique in the role they play in our city. Very few can even come close to their vision, passion, versatility and effectiveness. This ministry is many years in the making, in God's grace, I have no doubt their most fruitful years are yet to come.
I have known Rev. Dr. John and Sandra Snelgrove for over 22 years both as close friends and through my submission to their pastoral leadership. They have a strong calling to ‘pastor the pastors’, ministry leaders, the marketplace in Hong Kong, and the wider Asia region. It is clear to me, from the fruits they have borne for Jesus over the years, that they are anointed to pastor, support, encourage and develop others. I have been the benefactor of such support and have no hesitation in recommending them.
Some of the least pastored people in the world are pastors. These men and women work long, unpredictable hours, addressing every physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual issue under the sun, sacrificing their schedule, comfort, and a thousand other things, all without being relieved of their own personal, individual needs. Our most prominent, visible members of the body can easily get left out of the regular rhythm of ‘one-anothering’ (Romans 12:10; Galatians 5:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:11). They’re racing from one crisis to another, filling the gaps with counseling and training, striving to maintain a healthy and happy home. Too often there simply are not time and resources to set aside ministry even for a brief time to be encouraged, fed, and equipped themselves ("Are You Pastoring Your Pastor?” by Marshall Segal, desiringGod.org)
Pastors need safe places and people with whom they can be transparent, express problems and needs, and fi nd help and encouragement to carry on. Pastors need total to step back from ministry and fi nd a third party with whom to share their hearts, to fi nd love, grace, and friendship. To dream together and develop a clear vision. To develop their staff teams and key leaders. To effectively care for congregation members. To develop a heart for church unity and play their part in reaching their city and nation. PASTORS NEED A PASTOR.

I was connected with John through a mutual friend as he thought John may be able to mentor me as I pastor and lead my church in the season that we are in, which is moving my church to autonomous status (ie. seeking to grow, introducing new structures, etc.) I have found my time with John invaluable. Each time we meet, I am rapidly writing what he says down, clarifying questions and wanting to know more. John and Sandra know and are connected well with global Christian leaders, and are a wealth of knowledge of who to ask for what.
John's insight into church systems, with an experience of what does and doesn't work, allows me to be focused and not get bogged down to try everything. His experience is the scaffolding that I can springboard from into my own context. As I walk my own journey of leadership, I need someone to clarify things with and bounce ideas off who has gone before, and John is the one for me. He understands fully the role of a pastoral leader and taking a small church and navigating the path through growth and forewarns me of all the leadership pressures associated with it.
John is a man of vision, and who is friendly, authentic, truth teller, generous in sharing his resources, his connections and his experience with a heart of wanting to set me up to win in my context. I see John and Sandra are for the local church and want to help other leaders, even in other countries, to use and learn from their experience for God's Glory.

John Snelgrove has been nothing short of a life-changing influence on my own pastoral development and pastoral skill set. One of the things John does so well is understanding the potential in the next generation and providing opportunities and pathways for them to develop and grow. I have personally experienced the benefits of John’s direct development of me not just as a pastor but as a human being in general. When I first came on staff at the Vine I was full of enthusiasm but needed a lot of direction and equipping. Through John’s guidance, wisdom, and leadership, I was able to take on the senior leadership of our church within three years. John is passionate, insightful, encouraging and a world class developer of people. He has over 30 years experience in building leadership teams and equipping next generation leaders. I cannot recommend him more for anyone who wants to grow and develop as a leader, and I know he will have a large impact on any team who needs consultancy about future leadership development or pastoral growth. He is one of a kind.

To me, he’s a mentor, friend, pastor and coach who never fails to check in, encourage and show love. I can honestly say that without the encouragement of John, I would not have gained the confi dence to step into all the things the Lord has called me to. He saw things in me before I even saw them in myself. He’s gifted like that. He’s an incredible leader who inspires and encourages, and has so much wisdom to offer the churches and ministries within the city. I often fi nd myself still asking, ‘But what would John do?’ when I’m faced with issues and challenges in leadership and am so grateful that he’s only ever a message or coffee away. His experience in starting churches, uniting people, running events, leading ministries and ministering to the broken are unmatched and I’m so excited for what the Lord has in store for him!
